SP2201 - Exercise Prescription

Subject Description

This subject will provide the physiological basis, practical skills and scientific knowledge necessary to prescribe exercise. Students will develop knowledge and capacity to design and implement safe yet effective goal-specified exercise programs that are evidenced-based for the low risk healthy population and those with medical conditions, such as diabetes, obesity, asthma and cardiovascular disease. The subject will also cover the planning and logistics of exercise programming with appropriate progression, regression and exercise cessation according to typical risk factors identified during pre-screening.

Learning Outcomes

• describe the relationship between physical activity and health-related physical fitness
• explain and apply the principles of exercise prescription using scientific evidence that considers various training variables (e.g. training intensity/volume, exercise mode, exercise sequence, recovery)
• identify common risk factors for chronic disease development and how exercise may help to reduce these risk factors
• describe structural, physiological and motor development across the stages of the lifespan with appropriate exercise prescription for children, adolescents and pregnancy in women
• formulate exercise programs that suits the needs and abilities of clients by considering psychosocial factors via motivational techniques, physiological conditions of low risk healthy individuals and those with medical conditions
• explain when exercise progression, regression or cessation are appropriate based on assessment data
• identify exercises that are contraindicated due to stages of growth and development and/or clinical conditions

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (40%)

• Invigilated > Tutorial attendance and participation
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (40%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Must pass the non-weighted tutorial participation and achieve an overall mark of 50% to pass the subject
