Subject Description

This is the third research project subject within the professional honours major, and is the second of a two-subject chain with SL4200. Students will continue to work on their research project commenced in SL3200 and SL4200. Within this subject chain students will work in small, self-directed groups (with supervision), to complete a research project relevant to contemporary speech pathology. In enacting their research plan, students will be required to demonstrate a solid understanding of their research methodology as well as strong organisational and planning skills and showing independence and autonomy. Students will consolidate their knowledge on their research topic area by undertaking a critical analysis of the literature. Students will also collect, collate, and analyse research data in order to derive robust research findings. Students will then critically examine their research findings in relation to existing knowledge on their research topic, and analyse the relevance of these findings to speech pathology theory and practice. Students will present their research findings as a scholarly manuscript, and orally.

Learning Outcomes

• Critically analyse and synthesise literature relating to their research topic as needed to construct a scholarly research paper suitable for publication in an academic journal
• Demonstrate detailed and in-depth knowledge of research methods and methodology in undertaking their research project in a systematic and scholarly manner
• Conduct appropriate analyses of data in accordance with the chosen research methodology, and critically examine research findings in order to extract robust conclusions and implications for theory and practice
• Construct a scholarly research paper integrating relevant literature and outlining the project design, findings, and conclusions in a manner and format appropriate for publication in an academic journal
• Implement and maintain all approval and reporting procedures necessary to ensure that the research adheres to ethical and methodological standards appropriate to the research topic and setting
• Integrate and communicate complex findings orally, in a manner accessible to and engaging for a target audience, and respond effectively to examiners' questions and critique regarding research design, findings, and conclusions
• Critically evaluate and reflect on ones' own and group members' performance in relation to research project completion

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

• Individual hurdle progress report and reflection
• Assignment - Group hurdle introduction and methodologies draft
• Individual peer (10%) and self (5%) evaluation - (15%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (20%)
• Invigilated > Thesis - (40%)
• Invigilated > Presentations - (25%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must achieve at least 50% in each weighted assessment item, must pass all hurdle tasks, and must achieve at least 50% overall in order to pass the subject.
