SL3011 - Speech Pathology Clinical Processes C

Subject Description

This subject further develops students' clinical knowledge, skills and professional attributes developed in SL2012, as outlined in CBOS 2011 with an emphasis on ongoing professional and clinical skill development. Students will develop skills in counselling for clinical purposes and will further develop their skills and knowledge of multi-modal communication and voice disorders. Students will undertake clinical placements under the supervision and guidance of clinical educators and will have the opportunity to work directly with paediatric and adult clients with communication and/or swallowing impairments, and resultant activity limitations and participation restrictions.

Learning Outcomes

• Communicate effectively when interacting with and interviewing clients and others, and when reporting clinical findings verbally and in written format
• Conduct effective speech pathology assessment, interpretation, planning, and intervention; mostly independently
• Behave professionally and ethically and in accordance with policies and procedures of the clinical placement setting and the profession of speech pathology
• Assess and conduct interventions for voice disorders
• Describe and justify appropriate assessment and intervention approaches for multi-modal communication with respect to current theories and evidence-based practice principles
• Reflect on ones' own clinical competence with reference to the behavioural descriptors and exemplars in Compass (Generic Professional Competencies 1-4 and CBOS 2011 Units 1-4)

Subject Assessment

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (40%)
• Clinical placement hurdle
• Voice clinic reflection - (10%)
• OSCE intermediate level - (50%)
• Sessional placement hurdle

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must achieve at least 50% in each individual weighted assessment item, and must pass every hurdle assessment task, and must achieve at least 50% overall in order to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes, and must complete all clinical placement hours. Students must complete all assessment requirements and placement related activities.
