SL3001 - Stuttering Across the Lifespan

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject comprises three modules: Clinical practicum, Stuttering and Counselling. Module 1: Stuttering will provide the foundation theoretical and professional skills necessary for competent evidence based practice in the assessment, diagnosis and intervention for fluency disorders across the lifespan. Module 2: Counselling will provide an introduction to the principles and practices of counselling for speech pathology. Module 3: Clinical Practicum, students will work directly, with support from clinical educators with clients with a range of impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions related to speech, language, voice, fluency, multimodal communication and swallowing. Students will conduct assessments, plan and deliver services for clients, as well as providing community education. Students will reflect on clinical experiences and collate evidence to demonstrate their increasing clinical competence. Students will provide speech pathology services in weekly clinical sessions and will observe sessions in other settings.

• Clinical Competencies - assessment of skills in clinical practice using COMPASS National validated assessment tool [Pass/Fail]
• Quizzes or tests - Intervention test (Stuttering) - (10%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (50%)
• Assignment - Case Study (Stuttering) - (30%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must pass every individual assessment item and achieve at least 50% overall across all weighted assessments in order to pass the subject. Students must complete all clinical placement hours and must attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes.
