SL2012 - Speech Pathology Clinical Processes B

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Bachelor of Speech Pathology (IHCAP) or Bachelor of Speech Pathology with Honours.

Subject Description

This subject further develops the clinical knowledge, skills and professional attributes, as outlined in CBOS (2011). Client centred and evidence-based approaches to the management of communication difficulties will be explored. Students will develop skills in effective and responsive communication for clinical purposes. Students will undertake clinical placement under the supervision and guidance of clinical educators and will have the opportunity to work directly with paediatric clients with speech and/or language impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions. Students will be introduced to their role in relation to working with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, with literacy difficulties and/or complex communication needs.

Learning Outcomes

• communicate effectively when interacting with and interviewing clients and others, and when reporting clinical findings verbally and in written format
• gather background information, select and use assessment approaches, and interpret results to develop client centred and evidence-based management plans, with guidance
• apply clinical reasoning in assessment and management decisions with regard to particular populations
• reflect on one's own clinical competence with reference to the behavioural descriptors and exemplars in COMPASS (Generic Professional Competencies 1-4 and CBOS Units 1-4)
• describe and justify appropriate assessment and intervention approaches for multi-modal communication with respect to current theories and evidence-based practice principles

Subject Assessment

• Invigilated > Presentations - (20%)
• Clinical placement (hurdle)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (40%)
• OSCE Novice level paediatric - (40%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must achieve satisfactory in every individual assessment item and achieve at least 50% overall across all weighted assessments in order to pass the subject. Student must attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes. Students must complete all assessment requirements and placement related activities.
