SL2003 - Acquired Speech Impairments

Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject will explore acquired motor speech disorders of neurological origin across the lifespan (i.e. in children and adults). This subject will also explore aetiological factors, models, and processes contributing to acquired speech impairment. In this subject, students will develop skills necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and management of acquired motor speech disorders within a holistic and client-centred approach.

Learning Outcomes

• describe and compare the neurological conditions associated with motor speech disorders in adults and children
• explain the limitations and restrictions that motor speech disorders may impose on an individual's activity and participation
• describe, justify and interpret motor speech assessment approaches and results, and summarise client performance
• devise, demonstrate and evaluate intervention for motor speech disorders

Subject Assessment

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (30%)
• Invigilated > Quizzes or tests - (20%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (30%)
• Procedural skills assessment - (20%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must achieve at least 50% in each individual weighted assessment item and must achieve at least 50% overall to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes.
