SL1101 - Foundations of Speech Pathology Clinical Skills

Subject Description

This subject introduces the ethics and practice of the speech pathology profession in Australia, with a particular focus on the introduction of speech pathology clinical skills. Students will observe and reflect on a range of speech pathology and related allied health services. This will enable students to consider how foundation knowledge of anatomy, physiology, linguistics and phonetics relates to communication and swallowing disorders. Students will continue developing professional communication skills, including the use of information technology, spoken and written communication for academic and clinical purposes. Academic literacy, numeracy and reasoning skills for speech pathology practice will be expanded. Students will explore how work and community contexts interface with clients of differing age, with a particular focus on clients and services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate competent communication and numeracy skills as relevant to academic and clinical contexts
• Describe how knowledge of anatomy, physiology, psychology, linguistics and phonetics is foundational to speech pathology practice
• Observe and discuss the role and scope of practice of speech pathologists working in different settings and/or with different populations
• Reflect on one's own observational learning and background with reference to developing skills as speech pathologists

• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (60%)
• Hurdle participation in 3 clinical experiences
• Invigilated > Centrally-administered final exam - (30%)
