SL1004 - Linguistic Development

Subject Description

This subject introduces advanced linguistics concepts as a basis for studies in speech pathology including semantics, syntax and pragmatics, and the transcription of variation in speech. This subject introduces how these various aspects of language are acquired and presents an integrated overview of speech and language development.

Learning Outcomes

• describe the normal development of speech and language
• transcribe and analyse grammatical forms
• describe how semantics and pragmatics are used to convey meanings and to achieve speakers' purposes
• integrate and apply knowledge of phonetics, phonology, semantics, prosody, morphology, syntax and pragmatics to speech pathology practice

Subject Assessment

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (40%)
• Invigilated > Quizzes or tests - (40%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (20%)
• Hurdle professional experience

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must achieve at least 50% in all individual weighted assessment items, must pass the non-weighted hurdle assessment, and achieve at least 50% overall to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes and must attend all professional experience hours. Students must successfully complete all assessment requirements and placement related activities.
