PY1105 - Psychology for Social Welfare Practice (Dis Educ)

Subject Description

This subject is structured in five modules. Module 1 introduces psychology in the context of related disciplines and professions and explores the implications of scientific thinking and methodology. Modules 2, 3 and 4 address learning, lifespan development and social psychology as exemplars of historically central areas of investigation in psychology. Module 5 addresses stress and coping from the newer, more applied area of health psychology. Students are guided in their independent examination of a fifth area of their choice. Emphasises analysis and synthesis of information, conceptual thinking, reflective learning and acquisition of sufficient knowledge to provide a basis for understanding. Provides some scope for application of knowledge and understanding to daily and professional life. While primarily targeting community welfare students, the subject is of interest to other students seeking an introduction to the field.

Learning Outcomes

• explain the nature of psychology as both a scientific discipline which studies behaviour in a diversity of fields from varied theoretical perspectives and as a similarly diverse profession which applies this knowledge
• facilitate students independent study of a topic of their choice via a modified problem-based approach
• guide study in four major areas of psychological enquiry

• Four (4) online quizzes (1 x20% & 3 X 10%) - (50%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (50%)
