PS3001 - Physiotherapy 3

Enrolment in this subject is restricted to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Physiotherapy IHCAP and the Bachelor of Physiotherapy Honours Programs.

Subject Description

This subject will continue the exploration of the physiotherapist's role in the management of patients across the lifespan in the acute care/cardiorespiratory setting. The management of seriously ill patients will be explored, including the physiotherapy management of intubated and ventilated patients. Students will also develop knowledge and skills regarding evidence based cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Learning Outcomes

• explain how the structure and function of body systems, particularly the cardiopulmonary system, relate to key illnesses and diseases whilst justifying the impact of illness on functional capacity and the implications for adult and paediatric acute care/cardiorespiratory physiotherapy
• demonstrate proficient and safe professional performance of selected physiotherapy techniques appropriate for individuals in an acute care and rehabilitation environment
• integrate knowledge of pathophysiology with assessment findings in order to develop appropriate cardiorespiratory physiotherapy intervention plans utilising sound clinical reasoning skills
• evaluate the literature relevant to a selected cardiac or pulmonary condition and utilising sound written communication skills, relate the findings to rehabilitation for this condition, in a timely manner

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (45%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Students must pass the written exam, practical exam and viva (oral exam) to pass the subject. Students are also required to complete simulation sessions, clinical placement, submit a completed clinical logbook and complete ePortfolio items as described in the subject outline. No marks are allotted to the clinical placement, clinical logbook or ePortfolio items.
