Subject Description

This calculus-based subject covers topics in mechanics which forms the basis for further studies in engineering (statics and dynamics) as well as physics. This subject will cover experimental data analysis, vectors, kinematics, projectile motion, Newtonian mechanics, kinetic energy, potential energy and work, conservation of energy, centre-of-mass and momentum, conservation of momentum for systems of particles, rotational kinematics and dynamics.

Learning Outcomes

  • translate, comprehend, or interpret the information in a word problem while deciding on the relevant principles and diagrams necessary to solve fundamental problems in mechanics
  • select, identify, and use the appropriate data and physics principles to complete a problem or task, including the manipulation of mathematical entities to solve fundamental problems in mechanics
  • recognize information, concepts, and principles of fundamental mechanics, including the correct use of physics terminology and definitions
  • integrate and analyse experimental data using mathematical techniques in order to interpret experimental or observational data

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (50%)
  • Invigilated > Quizzes or tests - (20%)
  • Online quizzes - (10%)
