PC3304 - Pharmacy Practice (Research Honours) 2

Subject Description

This subject will further expand and deepen the student knowledge of aspects of pharmacy practice introduced in PC3302. The topics of legal and ethical issues, clinical dispensing and communication skills and drug stability will be advanced and expanded, and the pharmaceutics of endocrine dosage forms will be explored. Areas of focus for dispensing will include the management of refugee health and cultural sensitivity. Students will also undertake an interdisciplinary patient history-taking exercise in the community. An additional major area of focus for this subject will be in pharmacy management. Students will again undertake supervised clinical pharmacy placement, which may be either rural or urban in a variety of settings, including hospital, community or industry. In the research component of the subject, students will continue to develop their research skills as they are guided in the preparation of a research proposal and an ethics application for their research project.

Learning Outcomes

• Demonstrate a deeper understanding of the dispensing functions of a pharmacist, particularly patient history taking, relating this to professional practice through experiential placement
• Describe, interpret and apply accepted standards of practice and codes of ethics when considering issues relating to the acquisition, storage, dispensing, sale and supply of pharmaceutical products
• Explain the pharmaceutics of selected dosage forms and pharmaceutical formulations, including drug stability
• Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of pharmacy management
• Apply an in-depth knowledge of a contemporary pharmacy practice issue in order to design a conceptually and practically robust research proposal, plan and ethics application an then present their plan in a written report and oral presentation

Assumed Knowledge:  As this is a core level 3 subject in the BPharm(Hons)/MPharm pathway, students will be expected to have completed all core level 1 and 2 subjects
