PC2206 - Integrated Therapeutics 1

Subject Description

Infectious and dermatological conditions are commonly occurring forms of disease, particularly in tropical, rural and remote locations. In addition, over-the-counter (S2 and S3) medications form the front-line treatment of some of these conditions in patients who initially present in pharmacies. This integrated subject will allow students to describe and differentiate a range of infectious diseases and dermatological conditions, and recommend suitable treatment options, including S2 and S3 medications, and non-pharmacological management options. Students will also gain an understanding of the prescription medications used to manage these conditions. Students will also demonstrate communication skills during clinical scenarios with simulated patients. Students will develop an understanding of antimicrobial stewardship and microbial prevention and treatment, the identification of common infections and skin diseases, factors affecting the use of topical medications, and the role of the pharmacist and pharmacy assistants in over-the-counter primary health care.

Learning Outcomes

• Describe the pathophysiology and clinical presentation of common infectious and dermatological conditions relevant to pharmacy practice
• Describe and apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and rational drug use for infectious and dermatological conditions with a focus on vulnerable populations
• Recommend suitable drug treatments, including prescription, over-the-counter, complementary and non-pharmacological treatment options
• Demonstrate basic professional communication to patients with minor ailments
• Describe the professional and legal responsibilities associated with the supply of S2 and S3 medications
