OT4011 - Occupational Therapy Honours Research Part 2 of 2

Subject Description

This is the second part in a two part Honours Research subject chain. Within this subject chain students will work independently (with supervision) in completing a research project relevant to a contemporary occupational therapy theory or practice issue. In enacting their research plan, students will be required to demonstrate a solid understanding of their research methodology as well as strong organisational and planning skills. Students will consolidate their knowledge on their research topic area by undertaking a critical analysis of the literature, culminating in the production of a literature review paper. Students will also collect, collate and analyse research data in order to derive robust research findings. Students will then critically examine their research findings in relation to existing knowledge on their research topic and analyse the relevance of these findings to occupational therapy theory and practice. Following this, students will prepare a written summary of their research project in the form of a research paper suitable for publication in an appropriate academic journal. Students will also deliver an oral presentation summarising their research, following which they will be required to respond to examiners' questions regarding project design, findings and implications.

Learning Outcomes

• critically analyse and synthesise literature relating to research topic area as needed to construct a literature review paper suitable for publication in an academic journal
• demonstrate a detailed and in-depth knowledge of research methods and methodology in undertaking a research project in a systematic and scholarly manner
• conduct appropriate analyses of data in accordance with chosen research methodology and critically examine research findings in order to extract robust conclusions and implications for theory and practice
• construct a scholarly research paper outlining project design, findings and conclusions in a manner and format appropriate for publication in an academic journal
• integrate and communicate complex findings orally, in a manner accessible to and engaging for a target audience and respond effectively to examiners' questions and critique regarding research design, findings and conclusions
• implement and maintain all approval and reporting procedures necessary to ensure that the research adheres to ethical and methodological standards appropriate to the research topic and setting

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

• Invigilated > Presentations - (20%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (30%)
• Written research paper - (50%)

Special Assessment Requirements

In order to pass this subject students must: Submit all assessment; Achieve an overall average mark of 50% or above across the subject chain (OT4010 and OT4011).
