NS5367 - Advanced Topics in Dietetics Practice

Subject Description

This subject will extend students' theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in relation to advanced decision making in complex situations in dietetics practice. The subject aims to equip students with the skills and expertise to collaborate with other health professionals in a range of health settings to establish networks and protocols to achieve the best nutrition outcomes for patients. A range of topics will be presented focussing on current trends and innovations at the system level, for example, nutrition screening; nutrition support protocols; food service management and delivery systems; referral systems; and stakeholder engagement; and also at the group and individual client level, including complex presentations across the lifecourse; co-morbidities and the development of chronic condition prevention and self-management programs.

Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate an advanced depth of knowledge in the systems approach to dietetic practice and apply this to the development, implementation and evaluation of approaches to improve practice
• demonstrate advanced skills to be able to identify gaps in food service and dietetic service delivery, involve key stakeholders and develop plans for implementation
• demonstrate advanced skills to independently manage increasingly complex dietetics issues at the individual client, community and systems level
• demonstrate an ability to collaborate with other health professionals and specialised services in quality dietetics practice to optimise nutrition outcomes for individuals, groups and populations
