Subject Description
- This subject is focused on the challenges of midwifery and health care provision in rural and remote areas of Queensland and the health professional's role in providing advice, care and support in culturally considerate ways according to a public health agenda. It endeavours to recognise and address the challenges midwifery service providers face when they engage in autonomous and collaborative practice models, designed to enhance informed decision-making and choices and positively impact on health outcomes for individuals and society.
Learning Outcomes
- provide care consistent with the philosophy, ethics and NMBA (2006) Competency Standards demonstrating beginning competence in providing value based evidenced care for women and their families in pregnancy, labour birth in the first postpartum weeks
- critically analyse the tensions that arise when offering choices to women living in rural and remote Australia, in terms of the conditions that influence the delivery of maternity care
- examine the epidemiology of maternal and child health in rural and remote Queensland with an emphasis on the interaction of personal (biologic and psychosocial) factors with social, political, economic and political cultural structures
- demonstrate intersectoral, culturally safe, respectful health services that support individual rights, interests, preferences and beliefs
- critically analyse the theories, concepts and methods necessary to providing evidence-based safe midwifery care for women resident in rural and remote Queensland; and 6) summarise maternal, child, family and community health across the life span
