NS3229 - Newborn Challenges and Midwifery Care

Subject Description

This subject builds on student's theoretical knowledge and clinical skills when caring for the newborn including infants who are experiencing complex care in the special care nursery. Students will gain experience working within a collaborative multidisciplinary healthcare team in the care of newborns and their families who face challenges that can be unexpected including grief and loss.

Learning Outcomes

• explain the principles of support for the newborn requiring complex care
• develop strategies for the supportive care of the unwell neonate
• appraise evidence based practice to support the provision of family-centred newborn care within the multidisciplinary team
• apply national competency standards for the midwife to care provided

Subject Assessment

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (50%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (30%)
• Case study presentation - (20%)
• Professional portfolio (Pass/Fail)
• Professional Experience Placement (Sat/Unsat)
• Newborn resuscitation OSCE (Pass/Fail)
• Neonatal medication calculations (Pass/Fail)

Special Assessment Requirements

Examinations may be scheduled outside the regular university examination period - refer to NM year planner. Pass requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; attend 100% of clinical lab sessions or submit required makeup work; achieve a satisfactory grade for PEP; achieve at least 50% in the formal examination; achieve pass result for newborn resuscitation and neonatal medication calculations prior to PEP; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% for the subject.
