NS2003 - Promoting Healthy Labour Birth & Postnatal Period

Subject Description

    This subject focuses on the normal physiological processes associated with pregnancy, labour and birth, establishing breastfeeding and care in the early postnatal period. Students will develop decision-making skills essential to woman-centred collaborative midwifery practice for both women and the newborn.

Learning Outcomes

  • outline factors that influence midwifery care focusing on normal physiological processes across the continuum of care
  • describe the role of the midwife in advocating for and promoting physiological care across the pregnancy, birth and postnatal continuum
  • appraise the use of available technology to support the implementation of culturally safe midwifery care including the provision of education and information

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (50%)
  • Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (50%)
  • Professional portfolio (pass/fail)
  • PEP: AMSAT tool (pass/fail)
  • Recruit 2x Continuity of Care

Special Assessment Requirements

Examinations may be scheduled outside the regular University examination period - refer to NM Year Planner. Pass requirements: complete and submit all assessment items; attend 100% of clinical lab sessions or submit required makeup work; achieve a satisfactory grade for PEP; achieve at least 50% in the formal examination; achieve a satisfactory grade for the professional portfolio; recruit 2 women as CCE; achieve a cumulative score of at least 50% for the subject.
