Subject Description

    This module enables participants to develop knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to whom they provide a service, demonstrating an understanding of Australian socio-political history and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contemporary socio-political survival and resilience. Participants will demonstrate awareness and understanding of the fundamental values that are important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people: respect, equity, equality, responsibility, reciprocity, spirit, integrity and 'country'. Participants will explore and engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and community representatives through community-based activities using recognised processes for engaging and communicating effectively, through applying general cultural and local community protocols.

Learning Outcomes

  • evaluate the impact of the cultural competency of health professionals on their role in an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community context through the development of a community profile using demographic/service information integrated with knowledge from key community contacts
  • identify and prioritise appropriate mechanisms that a health professional, and a health service could implement to enhance social and professional community engagement and cultural competency according to general cultural and local community protocols
