Subject Description
- Advanced aspects of the biology of the immune system and interaction with other body systems with emphasis on: the evolution of the immune system in warm and cold blooded vertebrates; immunophysiology, regulation of the immune system and the role of the immune system in parasitic and infectious diseases, reproduction, auto-immune diseases, tumour and transplantation biology as well as the potential to manipulate the immune system.
Learning Outcomes
- Explain and discuss key immunological principles and terminology
- Apply reasoning to understanding disease states and their immunological cause
- Discuss the concepts of immunomanipulation and transplantation
- Perform and interpret basic immunological assays
- Demonstrate the ability to conduct and analyse results from experiments and to communicate findings in a written form
- Apply basic statistical methods to the gathering and analysis of immunological data
- Identify, read, critically appraise, assimilate and communicate relevant scientific literature
- Interpret and communicate experimental data on research in immunology
- Design experiments to answer immunology research questions
- Work effectively in small groups to complete practical tasks in immunology
