Subject Description

Academic Advantage (AA) aims to help students acquire relevant academic skills in preparation for an Australian tertiary education at JCU. The course offers development in skill areas provided by the JCU Learning Centre as well as other tertiary institutions worldwide. It is academically oriented and covers the following overarching skills: discourse analysis skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills, collaboration skills, digital literacy skills and success skills. On successful completion of AA, students will have acquired the theoretical and practical academic knowledge and skills relevant for tertiary education.

Learning Outcomes

• 1. Analyse discourse patterns in particular genres and how these patterns are used in discourse communities
• 2. Communicate effectively within an academic context, demonstrating an understanding of the nuances of genre and how this affects tone and language choices
• 3. Analyse and evaluate situations, issues and interactions to create logical and/or creative ideas and solutions
• 4. Employ a range of strategies to locate information appropriate to a task
• 5. Collaborate effectively across cultures to complete tasks and projects
• 6. Employ a range of digital technology tools and strategies to improve learning
• 7. Apply a range of smart learning strategies, such as time management and reflection, in order to improve learning and future success

• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (50%)
• Digital portfolio - (50%)
