Subject Description

    This subject introduces some of the theories and standards relevant to mediation practice in Australia. It provides a theoretical foundation for the practical skills taught in LB5501 Mediation Skills and Practice. Students will critically analyse some of the fundamental features of mediation (with a focus on the facilitative mediation model), and consider the legal and ethical aspects of mediation practice in Australia.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate complex conflict and related theories and standards for professional practice in conflict management and resolution
  • Independently and critically reflect on and assess their own capabilities and performance, and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support personal and professional development

Subject Assessment

  • Portfolio - (80%)
  • Initial Learning Brief (ILB) - (10%)
  • Final Learning Brief (FLB) - (10%)

Special Assessment Requirements

This subject is taught online through LearnJCU and students need to participate online throughout the whole study period. Students must engage in online learning from the first week of the study period and throughout the entire study period.

Assumed Knowledge:  LB5525, LB5530, LB5531, LB5533. Note that these subjects are not required for successful completion of the subject, however are subjects in the MCMR program that students are encouraged to complete prior to commencing any elective.
