Subject Description

    This subject provides an overview of the law relating to intellectual property rights in Australia. Principal areas of study include copyright, creative commons, patents, trademarks, designs, plant breeders' rights and traditional knowledge. The subject also provides an introduction to the international conventions that create a global legal framework for the protection of intellectual property rights.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate and critique the international framework governing the protection of intellectual property rights
  • Interpret and assess the regulation and use of intellectual property rights both globally and nationally
  • Examine and apply relevant principles of intellectual property law in practical scenarios

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (60%)
  • Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (40%)

Assumed Knowledge:  Students are assumed to have a basic understanding of the principles of contract law and the systems of governance in Australia.
