HS5111 - Alcohol and Other Drugs

Subject Description

This subject supports skill and knowledge development in analysing and applying specialised, multi-disciplinary interventions for substance use disorders across various populations in rural and/or remote Australia. A work-based approach is employed in which students will explore the use of both common drugs and New (and emerging) Psychoactive Substances and the complexity of consumers with comorbidities. Students will demonstrate their ability to communicate to both individuals and organisations by apply this knowledge in conjunction with theories of addiction (including neural activity) and dependence by designing and delivering educational material (in accordance with heath literacy principles) and psycho-education sessions respectively. Students apply health promotion and planning principles to meet the challenges of treating Alcohol and other Drugs issues in this environment.

Learning Outcomes

• apply advanced knowledge across a range of specialised psychosocial interventions relevant to substance use and mental health needs to a rural and remote setting
• critically analyse and plan evidence-based assessments and interventions across a range of substance misuse categories, including complex comorbidity and New (and emerging) Psychoactive Substances
• communicate complex knowledge and ideas about alcohol and other drugs clearly and coherently to individual and organisational audiences
