HS2403 - Health Promotion for Health Professionals

This subject is available to all students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy, Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Speech Pathology and Dental Surgery programs. Also available to students in other programs through negotiation with the Head of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Subject Description

This subject introduces students to the principles of health promotion and the historical context in which health promotion has evolved. Students will explore the social determinants of health and how this impacts on health issues of relevance to their professional discipline. Students will identify key barriers to behaviour change and examine frameworks and models that can be applied to address health issues of relevance to their professional discipline. Students will be also be introduced to the processes of health promotion program planning, implementation and evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

• Analyze the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion
• Critically reflect upon the social determinants of health in order to identify applicability to the students professional discipline
• Examine individual, group and population strategies and methods in health promotion and their most appropriate application
• Identify the barriers to behavior change and apply behavior change models to selected health issues
• Design a health promotion program to address a health issue relevant to the students professional discipline

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (50%)
• Invigilated > Presentations - (25%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (25%)
