EG1012 - Electric Circuits

Credit points:03
Year:2020
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

This subject includes: Introduction to electrical signals, circuit elements, dc circuit theory, and transient response: Electrical concepts, Electrical units and calculations used to apply them; Linearity; Energy transformations in electric circuits containing resistors, capacitors and inductors; Theory and applications of ideal operational amplifiers. This subject will depend on mathematical skills developed in Mathematics B and/or MA1000, including algebra and some calculus. The goal of this subject is to develop competency in a core set of electric circuit concepts and analytical techniques that can be applied to a wide range of problems and which will be useful to all engineering disciplines as well as forming the foundation for further study in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. This subject requires substantial practice at the techniques being studied rather than a rote memorisation process. Consequently, there is a focus on, and expectation of, students diligently completing a substantial number of analytical exercises each week in order to develop a robust understanding of the techniques.

Learning Outcomes

  • a functional understanding of the relationships between voltage and current in linear electrical components
  • the capacity to discuss and apply electrical principles and analysis techniques in typical applications
  • accurate and efficient analysis of simple circuits operating under transitional and steady-state dc conditions
  • design skills leading to the realisation of simple curcuits to satisfy basic engineering specifications
  • clear and precise communication of problem, strategy and solution; professional standards in submission of all assessable material

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (50% - 70%)
  • On-Course assessment, some of which may be invigilated - (30% - 50%)

Note that minor variations might occur due to the continuous subject quality improvement process, and in case of minor variation(s) in assessment details, the Subject Outline represents the latest official information.

Assumed Knowledge:  This subject requires prior knowledge of Senior Mathematics B or MA1020 (or equivalent) OR Senior Mathematics C.
