EE5901 - Advanced Sensor Technologies

Credit points:03
Year:2020
Student Contribution Band:Band 2
Administered by:College of Science and Engineering

Subject Description

Sensors are a fundamental component of many electronic systems, especially for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Being able to integrate a sensing system for IoT applications is essential for IoT engineers. This subject covers the fundamentals of building a sensing system, including basic principles of various types of sensors, signal conditioning circuits to process sensor signals, protocols for sensor data communication, and wireless sensor networks to integrate the sensing system into an IoT application. Finally, sensor fusion will be introduced at the end of the semester.

Learning Outcomes

  • evaluate the effectiveness of sensors based on the understanding of sensor characteristics
  • demonstrate an understanding of the working principles of resistive, capacitive, inductive, and magnetic sensors
  • analyse and design the signal conditioning circuits of various types of sensors
  • compare the different protocols for sensor data communications
  • construct a wireless sensor network for monitoring and collecting physical conditions
  • investigate the methods for sensor fusion and assess the method using an inertial measurement unit

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (60%)
  • Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (10%)
  • Laboratory Practice - (15%)
  • Final Project - (15%)
