Subject Description

    This professional practice subject uses blended, simulated and work-integrated learning approaches to develop preservice teacher knowledge of curriculum and pedagogy for diverse learners.Pre-service teachers also explore how classroom management is used to support and foster engagement and achievement in a variety of Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary educational settings. The subject is structured around the enactment of the reflective teaching cycle. This cycle is further developed in subsequent professional practices subjects in the course.

Learning Outcomes

  • plan lessons for diverse Early Childhood, Primary and/or Secondary contexts that appropriately demonstrate how the needs of individual learners are met through a range of pedagogical strategies demonstrating an understanding of intellectually challenging learning experiences for students
  • justify their choice of teaching and classroom management strategies to create and maintain safe and supportive learning environments
  • evaluate lesson designs and pedagogies (including both teacher-centered and student-centred approaches) by drawing on the reflective teaching cycle framework, theoretical perspectives and empirical data
  • reflect on teacher well-being, in particular, ethical dimensions of professional practice and resilience

Subject Assessment

  • Task 1 - Planning Task - (15%)
  • Task 2 - Annotated Lesson Plan - (30%)
  • Task 3 - Portfolio of Professional Practice - (55%)

Special Assessment Requirements

The completion of the required 5 days of Professional Experience and submission of the Professional Experience Attendance Record is a requirement to pass this subject. Attendance at Professional Experience Briefings is an essential component of Professional Experience preparation.

Assumed Knowledge:  Sound levels of academic literacy are assumed in this subject.
