DS6601 - Fundamentals of Orthodontic Diagnosis and Treatmen

Subject Description

This subject comprises a series of lectures and tutorials on fundamental orthodontic theory and covers both basic theoretical and clinical orthodontic skills that are essential prior to undertaking patient treatment. The topics in this subject include the concept of growth and development, facial analysis, cephalometric and space analysis in diagnosis and treatment planning in Orthodontics. Students take full orthodontic records and present their diagnosis and treatment plan for each assigned patient in group seminars. Students will be trained to undertake basic clinical procedures, including orthodontic bracket bonding and also obtain basic skills in proceeding with correct treatment sequences. Students are required to read and critically review the designated reading and present their views in the tutorials. The ability to critically evaluate journal articles is seen as an indispensable tool in the pursuit of clinical practice founded on Evidence-Based Dentistry.

• identify aetiological factors of a malocclusion
• critically analyse data obtained from the facial, cephalometric and space analysis to formulate successful diagnosis, planning and treatment of orthodontic patients
• analyse, synthesise and apply knowledge related to diagnosis and treatment planning during case presentations by peers in group seminars
• demonstrate skills to bond full-fixed orthodontic appliances and perform orthodontic adjustments
• apply the important philosophy of evidence-based Orthodontics
