DS6502 - Dental Implantology Part 2 of 2

Subject Description

This subject is designed to equip a clinician with the skills necessary to be able to successfully carry out clinical examinations, perform special tests, interpret data, diagnose and undertake dental implant treatment on patients. Treatment planning, surgical and prosthodontic management are covered comprehensively in addition to the ongoing maintenance of restored patients and the treatment early and late stage complications. The subject also includes a comprehensive review of the literature and the state-of-the-art giving the student the background in order to be able to critically and effectively evaluate new technologies, materials and techniques. The subject also introduces more advanced techniques including, grafting, augmentation and the applications of growth factors.

Learning Outcomes

• Become familiar with, and experienced in dento-alveolar surgical techniques associated with implantology including the atraumatic removal of teeth and pathology, the removal of bone and the grafting of hard and soft tissues
• To thoroughly understand the biomechanical principles associated with dental implants, their components and prosthetic reconstruction in order to design the most successful long lasting prostheses
• To have a detailed knowledge of the materials science and biomechanics of dental implant systems to enable them to be used appropriately and most effectively in all patient cases
• To understand the interactions between physiology, healing and osseointegration to be able to plan and optimize loading, healing and restorative parameters for dental implant patients
• To be able to successfully treat, maintain and manage dental implant patients having complex restorative features

Subject Assessment

As this subject is part of a subject chain, a final standard grade (e.g. P, C) will only be recorded for each subject after successful completion of all parts of the subject chain.

• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (40%)
• Invigilated > Presentations - (10%)
• Written case based evaluations - (30%)
• Non-Invigilated > Assignments - (10%)
• Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) - (10%)
