DS6501 - Dental Implantology Part 1 of 2

Subject Description

This subject is designed to equip a clinician with the skills necessary to be able to successfully carry out clinical examinations, perform special tests, interpret data, diagnose and undertake dental implant treatment on patients. Treatment planning, surgical and prosthodontic management are covered comprehensively in addition to the ongoing maintenance of restored patients and the treatment early and late stage complications. The subject also includes a comprehensive review of the literature and the state-of-the-art giving the student the background in order to be able to critically and effectively evaluate new technologies, materials and techniques. The subject also introduces more advanced techniques including, grafting, augmentation and the applications of growth factors.

Learning Outcomes

• Gain a comprehensive revision and understanding of facial anatomy relevant to the surgical placement and restoration of patients with dental implants and also the physiological and pathological processes associated with healing, osseointegration and periimplant disease
• Become familiar with radiographic imaging techniques as applied to the oral, facial and dental hard tissues and be able to apply such imaging to diagnostic, planning and reconstructive software and technology
• To be able to thoroughly and comprehensively diagnose patients who have lost teeth as a result of congenital absence, trauma or disease and plan their reconstruction and rehabilitation
• To be able to undertake to a high level of proficiency those surgical skills and techniques necessary to successfully place dental implants and restore them provisionally
