Subject Description
- This subject aims to prepare students for their transition from simulated dentistry to the clinic. Students will expand their restorative skills in the simulated environment, as well as develop their knowledge and skills in the area of prosthodontics, and the materials used for indirect restorations. The subject will further develop skills around the medical management of patients. There will be a focus on pain management, analgesia and anaesthesia, as well as the capacity to diagnose and develop treatment plans. Allied to this, students will develop their skills in taking medical and dental histories, and obtaining informed consent for examination and treatment. There will be a major focus on head and neck anatomy from a clinical and diagnostic perspective, along with a review the nervous system, with a particular focus placed on mood disorders, and the impact they have on oral health and dental practice.
Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate competency in restorative techniques involving both direct and indirect restorations, and develop skills in the restoration of deciduous teeth
- Discuss the range of dental materials used for both direct and indirect restoration, and explain the factors that influence the selection of materials for basic dental procedures
- Understand the principles and anatomical considerations for the administration of local anaesthesia in clinical dental practice
- Discuss the pharmacological action of drugs commonly encountered in dental care, and explain the potential for unwanted effects and drug-drug interactions
- Explain how a patient's medical condition may determine the type of treatment provided, or the medications used, in the dental clinic
- Explain how oral disease, in particular infectious and inflammatory disorders, may impact on systemic health, as well as how systemic condition may impact upon oral health

Special Assessment Requirements
Students must demonstrate competency in a range of direct and indirect restorative procedures in the simulated environment. (Pass/Fail) Students must demonstrate an understanding of the basic concepts in dental radiography, and be eligible to apply for a radiography licence. (Pass/Fail) Satisfactory attendance is required at (pre)clinical placements. Satisfactory academic and professional standard, as described in the College Assessment Guidelines, must be achieved in order to progress
