DS2003 - Operative Dentistry 1

Subject Description

In this subject students will develop skills to competently restore and replace decayed tooth structure with direct application of restorative materials, including amalgam and composite resins. In addition, students will develop basic skills in indirect restorative techniques. The replacement of lost teeth with removable appliances remains an important part of dental practice, and an introduction to the materials and techniques involved will be part of this subject. Continuing the basic practical training commenced in DS1002, this subject will include an expanded range of simulated dentistry excercises in preparation for clinically-based dentistry. Combining both theory and practical training, this subject will increase the student's knowledge and understanding of basic theory while developing the student's hands-on ability and clinical thinking. Basic dental skills are covered, including taking a patient's medical history, practising different types of cavity preparations, making impressions and basic periodontal treatment. Allied to this, there will be an emphasis on professional attitude and ethical behaviour in the clinical dental practice.

• Understand the aetiology of caries and the cariogenic process
• Understand the role and principles of preventive dentistry in clinical practice
• Understand the materials and processes associated with restorative dentistry
• Demonstrate competency in preparing cavities and restoring permanent teeth in the simulated environment in line with contemporary practice
• Understand potential aetiologies and risk factors related to periodontal disease

• Invigilated > Presentations - (10%)
• Invigilated > End of semester exam - (40%)
• Invigilated > Other exams - (50%)

Special Assessment Requirements

Satisfactory attendance is required at (pre)clinical placements. Satisfactory academic and professional standard, as described in the College Assessment Guidelines, must be achieved in order to progress
