Subject Description

    The subject introduces students to an overview of motivation and background of the new database developments. It is intended as an introduction to the most important advances with respect to the classical relational database systems. Through the subject, students will not only review principles and concepts of database systems but also develop knowledge of current DBMS support for Information Systems. Students will develop skills in techniques and tools to model, design, implement a database system and in addition acquire the ability to make informed DBMS selection from a critical appreciation of key database issues.

Learning Outcomes

  • explain and evaluate the fundamental theories and requirements that influence the design of modern database systems
  • develop a database using the Entity Relation model and normalisation techniques
  • create, implement and critically test and evaluate a database design
  • explain and critically evaluate contemporary database system and database management issues
  • analyse and critically evaluate database models and the background processes involved in queries and transactions

Subject Assessment

  • Practical assessment items - (10%)
  • Midterm Test - (10%)
