Subject Description

    This subject focuses on data collection from a group of people and subsequent data analysis. The subject provides an overview of the methods used in survey research and explores the place of survey methods in the research process. The strengths and weakness of survey methods are discussed in relation to other research methods. Students are taken through the practical steps required to establish research objectives, develop a questionnaire or other survey instrument, undertake fundamental data analysis, and report the results in a meaningful way through tables, graphs, oral and written reports. Topics considered include measurement, sampling, instrument design, data collection, data analysis and data reporting with an emphasis on practical, reliable and ethical skills development.

Learning Outcomes

  • appraise and design data collection instruments while applying sound principles of research ethics
  • apply and evaluate survey research methods
  • critically analyse and interpret survey data consistent with current standards
