Subject Description

    In this subject students will examine the different approaches to managing risk within the context of financial institutions, such as commercial banks and non-bank financial institutions. The issues of risk and risk management addressed in this highly controversial area are the disruptions caused in the markets leading up to and following the GFC (global financial crisis). Also examined is a detailed review at how financial institutions need a better understanding of how risk is managed. The main theme focuses on the risks facing managers of commercial banks and other financial institutions within the context of the financial system.

Learning Outcomes

  • categorise and explain the relative importance of financial institutions and their purpose in their roles as intermediaries
  • examine the importance of risk management and regulatory adherence in the international financial markets
  • appraise numerical and other data to assess the performance of banking institutions in the Tropics and within the global financial context
  • apply financial ratio analysis, interpret, evaluate and examine banks financial statements
  • examine and analyse off balance sheet activities of financial institutions  be able to distinguish and differentiate SPVs and other innovative banking products
