Subject Description

    A broad introduction to contemporary biology, from the way cells, organs and individual organisms function, through to molecular biology, genetics, micro- and macroevolution and the processes underlying the diversity of life and ecosystems.

Learning Outcomes

  • to learn about the basic principles of cellular activities
  • to understand the basics of the mechanism of inheritance
  • to gain an appreciation of the relationship between structure and function of cells and cellular organelles in living organisms
  • to understand the basics of ecology and micro- and macroevolutionary biology

Subject Assessment

  • Invigilated > Quizzes or tests - (20%)
  • Mid-semester test - (10%)
  • Formal report - (15%)
  • Invigilated > End of semester exam - (55%)
