BA1002 - Our Space: Networks, Narrative & Place

Credit points:03
Year:2020
Student Contribution Band:Band 1
Administered by:College of Arts, Society & Education

Subject Description

This core subject for the Bachelor of Arts examines networks and the related concepts of space, place, power and narratives. In exploring the concept of 'Our Space' we examine the importance of networks to place-making, and the power relations involved in such networks. We investigate how networks locate us, and how narratives of space and place flow through networks of communication and exchange. We also examine how networks not only shape our identities, but also the ways we experience our place in the world. Throughout the study period we will investigate, via narratives and thought-provoking case studies, how the contemporary networked world has a long history, and we will evaluate the impact of such networks on space and the making of place.

Learning Outcomes

  • analyse and evaluate a range of academic theories of power, space, networks, narratives and place-making
  • identify how relations of power are implicated in space, networks, narratives and place
  • evaluate and critically analyse how networks operate in a global context using a case study approach
  • synthesise and communicate complex ideas using appropriate terms and technologies
