Available to students enrolled in those degrees leading to a professional qualification or those offering a welfare studies/human services major.
This subject explores group work as a method of social work and the role of group workers in social welfare practice. Students will learn about and reflect on the theory, dynamics and practices associated with group work and develop practical group work skills by planning, participating in and facilitating small groups during the skills workshop.
Learning Outcomes
- be able to articulate the importance of and offer an appropriate rationale for group work as a social work method of practice within workplace contexts;
- be able to identify and describe the phases of group development and their importance across a variety of settings;
- be able to clearly describe the theories and parameters of group structure and their relevance to both group tasks and group processes;
- be able to identify, describe and demonstrate appropriate values and ethical practice when engaging in group work practice;
- be able to plan, participate in and facilitate supportive groups and evaluate the impact of their participation through a process of critical reflection.
| Assumed Knowledge: | To undertake this subject, students must have successfully completed 12 credit points (four subjects) of level 1 study at tertiary level |
