This subject addresses the fundamental principles of clinical exercise physiology professional practice. The roles and responsibilities of the exercise physiologist in an inter-professional environment; contemporary challenges of the healthcare sector; and the pathophysiological basis of chronic disease will be addressed. The subject provides a basis for the knowledge, skills and attributes required as an exercise physiologist involving an understanding of reflective practice, clinical note taking, communication (inter-professional, peer to peer and practitioner to client), as well as ethics, scope of practice and legal frameworks. The subject will also examine the effects of chronic disease on anatomical structures and the physiological changes occurring as a result of processes of disease, in order to provide an understanding of cardiopulmonary, metabolic and renal conditions, as well as musculoskeletal, neurological/neuromuscular, cancers and mental health conditions.
