This subject will examine special interest topics in the area of sport, the influence of exercise on immune function and blood biochemistry, and the physiological, biochemical and pathological effects of short and long-term exposure to exercise in extreme environmental conditions
Learning Outcomes
- to critique the classes of prohibited drugs and procedures, why athletes take these substances, their effects and possible side effects;
- to critically analyse the exercise-induced changes in blood gases, electrolytes and immune function;
- to critically evaluate the effects on physiology and health in different environmental conditions including heat and humidity, cold, and altitude both at rest and during exercise;
- to understand and evaluate the importance of maintaining hydration during exercise and the current recommendations for fluid intake prior to, during and after exercise;
- to demonstrate competency in the assessment of core and skin temperatures during exercise.
