Enrolment is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Speech Pathology, Speech Pathology IHCAP Program and the Bachelor of Speech Pathology Honours Programs.
This subject provides the foundation theoretical and professional skills necessary for competent practice in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/management of swallowing disabilities across the lifespan. Prevalence and causal factors of swallowing disabilities will be discussed. Current evidence-based methods for assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitation and other intervention will be described, demonstrated and evaluated with respect to clinical reasoning skills and evidence-based practice. The impact of swallowing disabilities on activity and participation and multidisciplinary perspectives to management will be explored.
Learning Outcomes
- describe aetiological factors involved in swallowing disabilities;
- select and administer appropriate informal and formal assessments for analysing the swallowing function;
- analyse, interpret and report assessment findings and make recommendations for interventions and future management for swallowing disabilities;
- demonstrate and educate others to conduct interventions to remediate or manage swallowing disorders.

| Assessment: | end of semester exam (40%); quizzes or tests (10%); presentations (20%); assignments (30%); hurdle - group demonstration of modification of food and fluid for intervention (%). |
| Special Assessment Requirements: | Students must achieve at least 50% in each individual assessment item, and achieve at least 50% overall in order to pass the subject. Students are required to attend and actively participate in at least 80% of all scheduled classes. |
