The fundamental principles of Electromagnetism, Optics and Early Quantum are taught to give student the basic skills required for more advanced studies in Engineering and Physics. Electromagnetism is one of the fundamental areas of Physics that has applications in wide variety of applications. The work covered is a precursor to applications to subjects such as Antenna design, EM shielding, propagation, electro-machinery, fibre-optic communications, mobile phone technology and computer technology to mention just a few. Topics include Gauss's Law, Biot Savart law, Ampere's law, plane waves, geometric optics, diffraction, interference, and early quantum.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and laws fundamental to Advanced Optics, and Electromagnetism;
- solve problems in Advanced Optics, and Electromagnetism, using the necessary physics concepts, principles, and disciplinary areas of mathematics;
- undertake laboratory work by gathering, analysing, and documenting experimental and observational data;
- communicate experimental physics data, results, and analysis by producing a workbook detailing experimental observations.
