This subject expands on foundation clinical diabetes knowledge of the aetiology and pathophysiology of diabetes including in depth coverage of diabetes management in special groups: paediatrics, pregnancy, elderly, Culturally and Linguistically Diverse, high risk foot, perioperative and in-patients the complications of diabetes, prevention, risk factor screening and management strategies. The impact of diabetes across the lifespan and across cultures is covered including the particular needs of Indigenous populations. Interdisciplinary management processes are also examined along with the psychosocial impacts for people living with diabetes.

Learning Outcomes

• determine the role of the diabetes educator in multidisciplinary team care, care coordination, and communication;
• evaluate and apply advanced clinical skills in the identification and management of disease progression;
• critically appraise and integrate chronic disease self-management frameworks into clinical DE practice;
• analyse the differences in diabetes management in a range of settings and populations and apply best practice guidelines.
