This subject covers the theoretical foundations of working with the community, such as applied primary health care, epidemiology, and health care systems. It guides students through the process of community assessment and program planning and evaluation. It also applies the principles of health promotion to a number of vulnerable populations.

Learning Outcomes

• apply demographic and epidemiological principles to community health;
• outline the link between the primary health care movement and contemporary community health;
• summarise contemporary quality and safety processes for community nursing/midwifery and care;
• explain cultural competence in the context of community nursing/midwifery and care;
• analyse and perform the process of community assessment and program planning;
• synthesise theoretical concepts in community health and apply this knowledge to vulnerable populations and across the lifespan;
• explore community based services for families and articulate the role of the community nurse/midwife;
• analyse the nurse/midwife's role in providing education to individuals and communities;
• provision of clinical care at the level commensurate with an entry level graduate nurse.
