This subject aims to develop students' knowledge in the specialty area of mental health nursing. The importance of the use of self and development of the therapeutic alliance will underpin approaches to managing mental disorders in a range of settings. Through exploration of relevant theory, nursing practice and skills components, students will develop the competence to provide mental health nursing strategies to clients experiencing a variety of mental disorders.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate ability to respond to the needs of consumers and carers from diverse backgrounds when the person experiences a mental disorder;
- continue to develop and implement knowledge and skills in building therapeutic nurse/client relationships;
- integrate the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for clinical application with consumers who have mental disorders;
- apply a range of appropriate nursing strategies for mental health consumers and their carers; and;
- utilise evidence based information for nursing practice.
