Classifying the types or genres of photography can be an imprecise exercise. Even once we identify genres, there is often a lot of overlap between the different areas. To add to this many genres also have sub-genres. In this subject we will look at this range and overlap of photographic genres. For instance is 'high speed photography' a genre or a technique? And what about 'portraiture'? For our purposes we will be looking at two broad categories of photographic genres; fiction and non-fiction. Fictional genres tend to allow an element of fantasy and so are more liberal in terms of photographic ethics, allowing significant retouching and blending of images. The types of photography that falls under the fictional genre heading often have commercial uses or are designed for exhibition. Non-fictional genres attempt to record reality in a more objective manner and mostly rest under the heading editorial photography. Of course, no photography is completely objective. For editorial travel photography as well as news photography the photographer has been very selective about what is included in the frame and what is not. There are not absolutes however exploring these categories permits us to determine the general set of ethics that would tend to govern each group of genres.
