This subject provides an important foundation in Linear Algebra necessary for further studies in mathematics, data science and engineering. Topics include: properties of matrices, determinants and matrix transformations, the four fundamental subspaces and Singular Value Decomposition, systems of equations, solutions to eigenvalue/eigenvector problems, and continuous and discrete least squares approximations for functions and data sets. Also, the benefits and limitations of numerical solutions to problems in Linear Algebra are examined. Application of solution methods are carried out by hand and using computer software such as MATLAB.
Learning Outcomes
- explain the mathematical concepts, fundamental theorems and definitions of Linear Algebra and their application;
- describe the properties of matrices and their use in Linear Algebra;
- derive and apply solution methods to common Linear Algebra problems;
- implement solutions to Numerical Linear Algebra problems using MATLAB.
