This subject examines the environmental history of Australia and the broader Pacific. The comparative aspect of this course will identify which differences and which similarities between physical environment and human culture are significant in the environmental histories of these places. In addition, the course will include analysis of the local environment by examining the particulars of human settlement in North and Far North Queensland.
Learning Outcomes
- Apply the diverse range of methodologies employed by environmental historians;
- Develop a framework for considering the relationship between society and the environment;
- Evaluate the historical ramifications of divergent attitudes to the natural environment both between cultures and between times;
- Appraise historical debates in environmental history and apply them to tropical Australia.
