This subject is designed to assist you in making a smooth and successful transition to college life. The purpose of this subject is to provide you with an opportunity to learn and adopt the knowledge, skills, motivation and behaviour that will enhance your success in learning and in life. The objective is to introduce you to a variety of college survive skills (note-taking, test-taking etc) as well as personal survival skills (goal setting, time management, self-awareness, effective communication skills etc), and to develop your preferred learning styles. The emphasis is on exploring how to learn more efficiently and effectively and on developing and practicing skills necessary to be academically successful. Students will examine the factors, which impact their learning, select relevant methods for deepening their learning and thinking processes, and develop self-regulation strategies for maximizing the effectiveness of their efforts.
Learning Outcomes
- interpret the theory of multiple intelligence and develop their preferred and most effective learning styles;
- be able to take comprehensive notes and use a variety of rehearsal strategies and organize time effectively;
- develop plans for researching a variety of topics using library, internet, other resource technologies and use APA referencing techniques;
- distinguish various ways to stretch their memories to make it easier to learn and retrieve materials.
